Who are Christians Against Poverty?

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a national debt counselling charity working through a network of centres based in local churches.  In Chippenham, Sheldon Road Methodist Church based at The Beacon Centre in Sheldon Road, has partnered with CAP and opened its CAP Centre in November 2010.

CAP shows God’s love in action providing free debt counselling for everyone.  This is done through providing counselling, advice and practical help.  Its unique hands-on approach empowers people to help themselves out of poverty and be released from fear, oppression and worry generated by overwhelming debts.

How do we help?

1.    Home Visit

After you have called CAP, you will receive a visit in your own home from a Debt Coach and Support Worker from the local CAP Centre.  Here we will identify your income, bills and debts to enable a realistic budget to be produced.

2.    Realistic Budget

A realistic budget is worked out by CAP HQ which prioritises your essential bills, we negotiate repayments with your creditors and seek to stop interest and charges wherever possible.  Your Debt Coach and Support Worker will then revisit you to explain your budget and advise on the payments you need to make and when.

3.    CAP Account

A CAP Account is then set up for you working like a simple bank account.  This enables you to pay into weekly or monthly payments in line with your budget to cover bills and debts.  From this account CAP then makes payments to your creditors on your behalf.  Your CAP Account also allows you to make savings for your future needs.

4.    Insolvency/Bankruptcy

If your budget review identifies that you are in severe debt, CAP may recommend Insolvency or bankruptcy routes.  If this is the case your Debt Coach will guide you through the process and even attend court with you.

5.    Debt Free and Beyond

Using you CAP Account to make the necessary repayments to clear you debts and receiving the support of your Debt Coach and Support Worker and the full team at CAP HQ you will be supported throughout your journey until you are debt free.  Once this happens you can continue to pay into your CAP Account even after you are debt free to help manage your finances.
